In 1830, French chemist Charles Sauria improved upon this by adding white phosphorus to match tips, making them easier to ignite. Unfortunately, white phosphorus was highly toxic and caused severe health problems, leading to its eventual ban.
In 1855, Swedish inventor Johan Lundström developed the first safety match. These matches contained an oxidizing agent and would only ignite when struck against a specially designed surface, significantly reducing accidental fires and making them safer for everyday use.
